The real problem is how few people appreciate original art, or understand the costs involved in archival printing and framing, when they can go to Michael's or Walmart and get something nice for the walls for $15. I use plain white mats and black aluminum Nielson frames that work in any decor, though some people prefer unframed prints, which I will sell if asked, usually for about $75-$100. But I do my own matting and framing, buy glass and foamcore in bulk, and standardize on my sizes (also do 16"X20") to keep framing costs in check. I began pricing too high, and now sell 18"X24" framed photos (photo size is 12"X18") for about $180-$200, less to friends and co-workers.
I'm in a semi-large city in upstate NY, and have had a number of shows, one in a commercial gallery, others in art centers, libraries, and juried shows, etc. I have been selling matted and framed "fine art" prints for a few years now, not making much, but helping to support my photography habit. You live and learn, but overall the show was a great learning experience, and I had an excellent time. On a side note, I had a few photographers tell me that the framed pieces that I offered were under priced. Some may not want to spend x on a 12x18 print, but are willing to spend y on an 8x12 of the same print. Offer different sizes of prints if possible. If you price an image high/er than others, it may devalue your other work. Also, emotional attachment should not be figured into the price of the print. You will need to check against your cost (print prices,materials, etc.) and adjust from there.īe consistant with pricing, and always be able to justify a price difference for say two different 8x10s. Others charge 2-3 times over materials cost.
Actually, my take was a little less because of the mats/backing, but it gives you an idea. I had read previously that some photographers charge by the square inch for their photographs. Alot of people commented though on the barnwood frames/landscape/nature photos. I sold more matted photos than framed pieces, and as another poster said the frame is more of a personal choice.
